Joseph Thomas Horton [h.1.10.6.1]

Joseph Thomas Horton was the first child of Henry Horton & Mary Morris born July 27th, 1881 at Burslem & christened September 11th at Holy Trinity, Sneyd, Staffs.

In 1891 Joseph & his parents were living at 50 Nile St, Burslem.  He had 3 younger sisters by this time.

From 1894 until 1899 Joseph attended Ellesmere College Grammar School, Shropshire.  He qualified as a teacher & from 1900-1903 he worked as a supply teacher at Sneyd Schools, Burslem.

Joseph went up to Bishop Hatfield  Hall, Durham University in 1903 & in 1905 obtained his Theology degree.  While at Durham he was President of the Student’s Union.

From 1905 until 1907 he attended Ely Theological College.  In 1907 he became Deacon & assistant Curate at St Mary Magdalene, Bradford, Yorks.

Joseph was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Ripon in 1908.  From 1914-1920 he was assistant Curate at Holy Trinity, Bradford & was in charge of St Alban’s Mission.  He was Vicar of Holy Trinity from 1920-1928.  During this period (April-June 1925) Joseph married Hilda Ward in Bradford.  Hilda was born June 19th, 1899 at Pudsey, Yorks.

Joseph then moved to become Vicar of St Mary the Virgin, Middleton, Leeds from 1928-1956.

Joseph & Hilda had 2 sons, both of whom followed in their father’s footsteps after their education at Leeds Grammar School & University.  They both trained in theology at the College of Resurrection, Mirfield.  Both were ordained on September 21st, 1952 at Newcastle Cathedral by the Right Rev. Noel Baring Hudson. At their ordination both sons wore over their vestments stoles made from their mother’s silk wedding dress. 

In 1953 son John, curate of St Peter’s, North Shields, married Jean Chisholm. Also in 1953 son Christopher married Josephine Alice Newbold in Bury, Lancashire.

Joseph died on March 3rd, 1966, aged 84, & he was buried at St Mary the Virgin, Middleton, Leeds.

Hilda died, aged 97, on January 10th, 1997 in North Tyneside & was buried at St Mary the Virgin, Middleton, Leeds.
